More videos....

Yep. More flicks about energy!

This is a great little movie about "Deploying Home Energy Management Agents" from the Aladdin project. Focusing on energy use in England, the illustrative movie looks at COST more than anything.

Unfortunately it wont let me embed it. So you're just going to have to click the link : Deploying Home Energy Management Agents

The Energy Literacy Platform looks at the conservation of household electricity.
"With the Energy Literacy Platform we offer, users can learn about the amount of electricity they are consuming every day in a more intuitive wat and increase their home energy literacy. Through this our goal is to reduce wasteful electricity usage and promote more efficient home energy consumption."

The system utilises in-home 'plugs', websites and applications to combine the most effective platform current technology is able to provide.

Energy Rehab is another energy saving concept using STICKERS! Of all things! A little concept vid with oversized bills, tiny european apartments, and borrowing money from siblings, the 'sticker' concept uses future technology. How this is achieved, I have no idea. I have a hard enough time keeping my travel10 bus ticket, so this card would have a rough time in my house.

Im out!

The thing about projectors...

The previous few posts with videos about interactive surfaces have mostly been developed using projectors. I hate projectors. Yeah its pretty and all when Sydney throws out some projectors in the city on buildings and whatever, and call it a "Light festival" but its still crap. People walk through projections, breaking the image, the machines are never properly calibrated, they break blah blah blah.

Microsoft, those clever kids, rocked out this video a while back demonstrating their vision for 2019 (why 2019? I have no idea). They have cutesy gadgets, simulations, tablet to wall to table interface and overly cheerful people. That stupid newspaper though. WHY? Why have a a flexible material that has UI and a clear need for a flat surface? The reason newspapers are newspapers is due to the cheap material, mass production, and the most efficient transportation. Ugh. Don't get me started on the roof-top gardens.

Back on point - Projectors.

Adobe created an interactive installation. Again projectors and screens and infra-red cameras etc. Just watch it and get the info.

Do these types of technologies disengage us from the tangible world? Do they inspire us to flail around as if we've been caught in spider webs? The landscape of the local train platform will look very different if this type of ideology/technology develops our watches re post "HUD Test, mgfxstudio".

Dario Buzzinni (great name), italian inventor, created "Not-So-White-Walls". The wallpaper is covered in a grid of sensors and techy stuff which makes it far more tangible than projector walls. In theory it looks as if gadgets AND people can manipulate these walls.

Idea

Pitching the concept to class groups went over well. Goodwin suggested actually making the product as a user-interface surface. Yeah. Immediately words rushed through my head including scale and cost and time and quality. I am in no way a programmer. A unit of Processing & Arduino does not make one even closely adequate. I could always try it. Besides wasted time and pulled-put-hair what really would I loose?

researching researching researching.

Spanish design agency "Think Big Factory" have developed and interactive "Ipad House" using technology existing today. The 'Openarch' system utilises projectors and sensors that turn normal everyday surfaces (ie walls/floors) into interactive planes. Watch it.

To be honest I was mostly excited for Tetris on the floor. Is it too much though? I mean really I though I was on my laptop far too much. If this becomes a reality, optometrists will make a bundle (or more so than they do already) and Panadol sales will sky rocket. Though the opposite may happen, where being submerged within media filled homes will overwhelm our senses and we revert back to the norm.

Austrian design agency Strukt Design Studio was commissioned to design a digital wall that used video projectors. The vid below shows how the 'digital wallpaper' was created and its possible uses. While not interactive, its still a pretty cool way to have different patterned interiors.

Space

With complements to Google Maps: Im trying to figure out A: where to place this zooper dooper apartment/smart structure and B: the view to possibly create a destroyed-by-global-warming world.

The idea as of yet is to create visual/tangible energy/waste/water in the home. You should be able to see the amount used, in comparison and effects - it should become inbedded into human action/thought.

So how to display it? This short, made by the kids at mgfxstudio rocked out a hyper-reality concept. Very Iron Man-esque.

Another future structure-integrated with "Photovoltaic Glass"concept. Interaction overload or sensory info-design? Is this the direction I want to move in?
